On the way up you pass the room where the city once locked its charters, then the clock chamber, then the two rooms that justify the 10.30 timing. The drum is the automatic half of the carillon, a pegged cylinder turned by the clock, and it plays the little tune you hear on the quarter-hour when nobody is in the tower at all. The keyboard room above it is the manual half, and watching it used is nothing like watching an organist. The batons are struck with closed fists, the heaviest bass bells are worked with the feet, and the player is visibly doing labour. Stand in there at eleven and conversation stops being possible, which is the whole reason to come.

Above the keyboard sit the 47 bells, and above those the open gallery with the roofs, the canals and the ring of ramparts. The gallery is where everyone takes the photograph. The two rooms below it are why you booked the slot at that particular hour.

A seat under the bells on the Markt

If the slots are gone, or the wind took the tower, you can still hear the concert properly. Grand Café Craenenburg (Markt, facing the belfry) is directly under the sound. Sit on the terrace at eleven and the carillon reaches you overhead and unmuffled, rather than filtered through a louvre as it is for the people inside. Coffee and beer run roughly €4 to €7, light plates more. It is a walk-in café open seven days, the terrace swallows groups, and in high season a sizeable party should ring ahead if it wants to be indoors. The house has history ballast too: Maximilian of Austria was held prisoner here in 1488, which is the kind of thing a Markt café usually has to invent.

Where you can put your hands on a bell

Ten minutes west of the Markt, Concertgebouw Circuit & Sound Factory ('t Zand) is the only place in the city where a visitor can actually play a carillon bell. The bells up there are the Belfort's own cast-offs, and the Belfort is in the view while you ring them, which makes the connection for you without a guide having to say it. Entry is €12 adult, €6 under-26, free under 6, and the circuit takes about an hour. Guided adult tours run on selected days at 3pm for €3 more per ticket, and groups are handled through the normal booking system rather than by negotiation.

Concertgebouw Circuit & Sound Factory, Bruges

This is the answer to a closed tower, a windy forecast, or a group that cannot climb. It is also the better first stop if you are travelling with children who will get more from pulling a rope than from 47 bells heard from underneath.

The carillon that plays itself

Fifteen minutes north of the Markt, along the water, the Beiaard Grootseminarie (Major Seminary carillon) (Potterierei) is a listening stop and nothing else. Be clear about that before you walk out: there is no tower climb, no ticket desk, no interior. You stand on the quay and you hear 26 bells cast in 1637, driven by what is credited as the oldest surviving one-piece automatic playing mechanism in the Low Countries. It is the machine doing by clockwork what Berteloot does by hand a kilometre south, which is why it belongs in the same day. Entry to the grounds is only by prior arrangement with the seminary on +32 50 33 03 62, and a group should assume the street is where it will stay.

264 steps and no queue in Lissewege

North of the centre, the village of Lissewege has the area's second bell tower. Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Bezoekingkerk (Lissewege) is free, 264 steps, and has no ticket system to sell out. Six bells and a tierce-bell automatic chime is a modest instrument next to the Belfort's 47, and that is exactly the use of it: you can see the whole mechanism as one object rather than as a chamber you walk through. The tower explicitly accommodates groups, and opening hours can be extended for school parties by arrangement, which inverts the Belfort's policy completely. Hours shift with the season, so confirm before making the trip out; there is nothing else up there to rescue a wasted journey.

Why the taller tower never got the bells

O.L.V.-kerk Museum (Museum of the Church of Our Lady) (Mariastraat) out-tops the Belfort by 39 metres and has no carillon and no public climb. That one fact explains the skyline. The bells went on the merchants' tower because the carillon was civic equipment, the thing that told the market and the workshops what time it was, rather than church property. The nave is free to enter, the museum is ticketed at €10 adult, €9 under-26, €5 under-18, free under 13, or €19 combined with Gruuthuse. Sundays it opens only from 13.30. Groups are taken on a booked slot, with guided visits available through Musea Brugge.

Two minutes from the Belfry door, Stadhuis (Bruges City Hall) & Brugse Vrije (Burg) is the other half of that story: the count's administration and then the city's, and still a working city hall where couples get married on weekday mornings. Entry is €8 adult, €7 under-26, €4 under-18, free under 13, open daily 09.30 to 17.00. One ticket also covers the Brugse Vrije at weekends, or on a weekend return within seven days, which is worth knowing if your Saturday is already full. The Gothic Hall is big enough for a coach party; the Brugse Vrije is tighter and a large group will feel it.

Buildings in Bruges still doing their first job

On the eastern ramparts, Sint-Janshuismolen (Kruisvest) still grinds grain, which makes it the companion piece to a tower whose bells are still played by hand rather than recorded. Around €6 adult, free under 13. It opens 1 April to 2 November only, closed Mondays, 09.30 to 12.30 and 13.30 to 17.00. The viewing floor takes a small group, but the internal stairs are steep and narrow and a coach-sized party cannot be inside at once.

Brouwerij De Halve Maan (Walplein) is the same idea at industrial scale, and 220 steps of it. The rooftop is the best paid view of the Belfry that is not the Belfry itself, which makes it the sensible booking for anyone who could not get a tower slot. The classic tour is €16 and runs about 45 minutes in Dutch, French or English; the XL at €26 runs about 90 minutes at weekends; ages 7 to 15 are €8.50. Booking is required, guided tours are capped hard at 25 people, and a larger party has to be split across departures. Steep stairs again, sensible shoes again.

Two working rooms in Sint-Anna

Adornesdomein & Jeruzalemkapel (Sint-Anna) is the domestic version of the working-building idea. The family that built it in the 1400s still owns it through its descendants, and mass is still said in the chapel every Saturday at 09.00. Entry is €11 adult, €9 for seniors and groups of 15 or more, €7 for ages 7 to 25, free under 6. Open Monday to Saturday, 10.00 to 17.00, closed Sundays and Belgian public holidays, and tickets are sold only at the desk, with no online booking to fall back on. Groups of 15-plus should register in advance, because the interior space is genuinely limited; private guided tours of the family house are by appointment.
