Bruges Christmas Markets 2026: Winter Glow Dates and a Two-Day Plan
Bruges, Bélgica

Wooden chalets go up on the Markt on 20 November 2026. For the first winter, Wintergloed builds them from the city's new Brugse Kaban chalets, floodlit under the 83m brick Belfry. A glass of glühwein or jenever costs €4 to €8, and the market stands until 3 January 2027.

Wintergloed on the Markt

Wintergloed Christmas Market (Markt) is open-air and free to walk into. Chalets fill the vast square, the stepped-gable guild houses ring it in ochre, red and green, and the steam off the mulled wine shows in the cold air. It opens 11:00 to 22:00 Sunday to Thursday, 11:00 to 23:30 on Friday and Saturday, and until 03:00 on New Year's Eve.

Friday and Saturday evenings pack the lanes shoulder to shoulder. Come between Sunday and Thursday if you want to stop at a stall and read a label without being moved along. If you are meeting people, name the Belfry corner as the spot and wait there rather than in the lanes.

Nothing here needs a ticket and nobody is turned away at a door. The stalls sell fairground food and hot drinks, and that is the honest difference between this square and the other one.

Buying at Simon Stevinplein

Wintergloed at Simon Stevinplein keeps the same dates as the Markt and stocks short-chain and artisanal producers. Craft goods start at €10. Do your buying here.

The square is small and tree-lined, built around the dark bronze statue of Simon Stevin on its plinth, with a tight horseshoe of lit chalets around him. It takes a fraction of the Markt's footprint and is calmer for it. Entry is free and unticketed.

Day one above the Markt

Belfort (Belfry of Bruges), Bruges
Belfort (Belfry of Bruges), Bruges

Belfort (the Markt) gives you the market from above. 366 worn spiral stone steps climb the leaning medieval brick tower, past a 47-bell carillon to an open parapet that looks straight down on the lit chalets. Winter hours are short: 10:00 to 18:00 Sunday to Friday and 09:00 to 20:00 on Saturday from 3 November.

Book the timed slot online before you travel. Numbers inside the tower are capped and group visits are not allowed, so every person in your party buys an individual ticket for a set time. Adult entry is €15 to €16, a ticket for ages 7 to 17 is €13 to €14, and under-sevens go free. Take the 09:00 Saturday opening if you are here on a weekend, before the square below fills.

Then sit down above the market at Duvelorium Belgian Beer Bar (Markt 1), a first-floor belle-époque room inside the neo-Gothic Historium with tall arched windows and a narrow balcony over the chalets, facing the Belfry. Belgian beers are €5 to €9, and one ticket desk serves both the bar and the Historium attraction. It closes at 18:00, so build it into the afternoon and arrive with daylight left for the balcony. Private hire costs €300 an hour with a two-hour minimum, after 18:30 or before 11:00.

The Bruges horse-drawn carriage rides stand is on the western edge of the Markt by Sint-Amandsstraat, drivers queued with black lacquered open landaus, brass lamps lit and a tartan lap rug for your knees. A carriage is €70 for 30 minutes and seats five. Rides run from 09:00 every day of the year, winter included, when the canal boats do not. On Wednesday mornings the stand moves to the Burg for the food market, so look there first.

Day one after the chalets close

Staminee De Garre (the alley between Markt and Burg) pours the best beer in Bruges, an 11% house tripel served in a stemmed goblet with a dish of free cheese cubes. The tavern runs over two storeys down an alley barely a metre wide, low-beamed, lace curtains at the windows. Beers are €5 to €8.

The alley entrance is hard to spot even from 30 seconds away on the Markt. The rooms are tiny, four people is the maximum, and nobody takes a reservation. The house tripel carries a three-drink limit. Doors open at 12:00 and close at 23:00 Wednesday to Sunday, 19:00 on Monday and Tuesday.

't Brugs Beertje (Kemelstraat) is where the evening goes once the squares go dark. Enamel brewery plaques and old beer trays cover the walls and ceiling of the dim backstreet café, and 300 bottles sit on a hand-written list. Most beers are €4 to €7, and it stays open to 00:00, or 01:00 on Friday and Saturday. It fills fast after 19:00, and it is shut all day Wednesday.

Day two, chocolate at Simon Stevinplein and Wijnzakstraat

The Chocolate Line is on Simon Stevinplein, on the market square itself: Dominique Persoone's own shop in a grand townhouse. The bean-to-bar work happens behind glass at the front, roaster, winnower and conches in view, and the bonbons sit in the cases in wild colours and sculptural shapes. This is the best-quality chocolate you can buy in the city. Boxes start at €15 and large assortments from €40.

It opens every day, 09:30 or 10:30 to 18:30. Walk in for a box. Workshops and tastings need booking in advance.

Choco-Story (Wijnzakstraat) fills a 15th-century red-brick house, with Maya cacao artefacts and antique moulds upstairs and a live praline demonstration downstairs that hands out warm samples. Adult entry is €14 and the visit takes 90 minutes. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 daily, closes on 25 December and 1 January, and finishes at 16:00 on 24 and 31 December. Check your date against those closures before you plan a morning around it.

Day two breweries and the beer wall

Brouwerij De Halve Maan (Walplein) is the last working brewery in the historic centre and the home of Brugse Zot, which it sends through a beer pipeline running under the streets. The copper brewhouse stands in the courtyard, and steep iron stairs climb to a rooftop walkway with a panorama over the tiled roofs of Bruges. The 45-minute tour is €16, the 90-minute XL tour €26 at weekends. A party of 20 or more pays €11 a head with a Brugse Zot included, booked ahead.

The bar opens daily and runs late from Wednesday to Saturday, and it shuts at 18:00 on Monday, Tuesday and Sunday. The brasserie seats large parties.

Brouwerij Bourgogne des Flandres, Bruges

Brouwerij Bourgogne des Flandres (Wollestraat, on the Dijver canal) is closer to the market squares, brick-built, with open fermentation vessels in a timber loft and a canal-side terrace that looks at the Belfry across the water. It distils its own genever, the same spirit poured at the jenever stalls. A self-guided visit starts at €13, or €16 with a tasting, and packages run to €39. The audio guide comes in 10 languages. Book a tailored visit or the blending workshop at [email protected].

Bruges Beer Experience, Bruges
Bruges Beer Experience, Bruges

Bruges Beer Experience (Breidelstraat) is two minutes from the Markt, between the two market squares, in a tall gabled house. iPad-guided displays lay out hop sacks and copper kettles, and the top-floor tasting bar pours from 16 taps with a window onto the Markt rooftops. Entry with a tasting is €13 to €18. It runs 10:00 to 18:00, with the bar to 18:30. Keep it for the hour when the market lanes get too cold to stand in.

2be Beer Wall (Wollestraat 53) is 90 seconds from the chalets and the easiest place in the city to buy beer to take home. The glass-cased wall holds more than 1,000 Belgian bottles, each one beside its own branded glass, and the rear terrace hangs directly over the Groenerei canal with the Belfry behind. Shop bottles start at €3 and bar beers are €5 to €8. It opens daily 09:30 to 19:30, so treat it as a daytime stop. Nobody takes reservations and the terrace is small, so walk in and spread out while there is room.

Day two on the ice at Koning Albert I-park

IJsgloed lays real ice in the park beside the canal, strung overhead with thousands of warm-white bulbs, a timber winter bar along one side looking straight out over the rink. Skating is €9.00. A party of 10 or more pays €8.00 each, and Bruges schools €5.00. The rink runs 10:00 to 22:00 and the bar until 00:00, on the same dates as the squares.

It is a 10-minute walk from the Markt, and that walk is why the ice never gets the crush the squares do. The bar takes walk-in groups without booking, so it is the place to wait while the rest of the party skates.

If your dates include 18 to 20 December

Handmade in Brugge MAKERSmarkt (Jan Garemijnzaal, Stadshallen) is new for this edition and runs three days only: Friday 18 December 16:00 to 20:00, then 11:00 to 18:00 on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December. Trestle tables of ceramics and textiles fill the hall under its high beamed ceiling, inside the medieval Stadshallen at the foot of the Belfry.

Entry is free and maker prices start at €15. The makers are from here. The hall is indoors and dry, and you do not need to book.

Planning the two days

Wednesday is the awkward day: 't Brugs Beertje is shut and the carriage stand moves to the Burg for the morning. Book the Belfry slot and any brewery tour before you travel, and check Choco-Story's Christmas and New Year hours if your trip lands on those dates.

When do the Bruges Christmas markets run in 2026?

Wintergloed runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 on both the Markt and Simon Stevinplein. Hours are 11:00 to 22:00 Sunday to Thursday, 11:00 to 23:30 on Friday and Saturday, and until 03:00 on New Year's Eve. Entry is free on both squares; a glass of glühwein or jenever is €4 to €8.

What is the difference between the Markt and Simon Stevinplein markets?

The Markt is the big one: chalets right across the square under the Belfry, fairground food and hot drink. Simon Stevinplein is small and tree-lined, with the statue of Simon Stevin in the middle and short-chain producers selling craft goods from €10. If you are buying anything, buy it at Simon Stevinplein.

Can I see the Christmas market from the top of the Belfry?

Yes. From the Belfry's open parapet the lit chalets sit straight below you, 366 steps up past a carillon of 47 bells. Winter hours are 10:00 to 18:00 Sunday to Friday and 09:00 to 20:00 on Saturday from 3 November, and adult entry is €15 to €16. The tower limits how many people are inside at once and takes no groups, so book an individual timed ticket online before you travel.

How much does the ice rink cost?

Skating at IJsgloed in Koning Albert I-park costs €9.00, or €8.00 a head if there are 10 of you, and €5.00 for Bruges schools. The rink opens 10:00 to 22:00 and the winter bar until 00:00, on the same dates as the markets. It is a 10-minute walk from the Markt.

What is closed over Christmas and New Year?

Choco-Story on Wijnzakstraat is closed on 25 December and 1 January and shuts at 16:00 on 24 and 31 December. 't Brugs Beertje is closed all day every Wednesday, and De Halve Maan's bar shuts at 18:00 on Monday, Tuesday and Sunday. The Markt market itself stays open to 03:00 on New Year's Eve.
